Your First Steps After Certification

The moment your Miracle Leaf physician submits your certification to the OMMU registry, you are legally authorized to purchase from any licensed Florida dispensary. You do not need to wait for your physical card to arrive in the mail. Here is what to do in the first 24–72 hours.

1
Immediately after your evaluation

Note your OMMU Patient ID number

Your certifying physician will give you your OMMU patient registry ID number before you leave. Write it down — this is your proof of certification at dispensaries until your physical card arrives. Most dispensaries can also look you up by your Florida ID once the submission processes.

2
Day 1 — your first dispensary visit

Visit any licensed Florida MMTC

Bring your valid Florida driver's license or state-issued ID and your OMMU patient ID number. Dispensary staff pull up your active certification, confirm your approved delivery methods and purchase allowance, and guide you through available products. There are multiple licensed MMTCs throughout Palm Beach County.

3
Within 1–3 days

Complete your OMMU online registration

Log in to the OMMU patient portal at mmuregistry.flhealth.gov, upload your passport-style photo, and pay the $75 annual state registration fee Verified March 2026. Your physical card will arrive by mail in approximately 10 business days.

4
~10 business days

Receive your physical OMMU registry card

The state mails your Florida MMJ card to the address on your registration. Keep it safe — you'll need it for future dispensary visits and as proof of your patient status. Your patient ID number remains valid at dispensaries before the card arrives.

Your First Dispensary Visit — What to Expect

Florida's licensed dispensaries — formally called Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTCs) — operate more like a pharmacy than a traditional retail store. Here is what the process looks like:

  • Check-in: Present your Florida ID. The staff member pulls up your OMMU registry record, which shows your active certification, approved delivery methods, and remaining 70-day purchase allowance.
  • Consultation: A dispensary consultant walks you through available products, delivery methods, and options that fit your physician's certification. For first-time patients, this is an important step — do not skip it.
  • Start low: If you have never used medical marijuana or are trying a new delivery method, start with the lowest available dose. Effects vary significantly by delivery method and individual tolerance.
  • Purchase is recorded: Every transaction is entered into the OMMU registry in real time. Your remaining 70-day allowance is updated immediately.
For first-time patients
Tell the dispensary consultant it's your first visit. They can walk you through starting dose guidance, explain the differences between delivery methods, and help you understand what to expect. This conversation is part of what you are paying for with your certification.

Florida MMJ Product Types: What's Available

Florida dispensaries offer six approved delivery methods. Your physician specifies which delivery methods are included in your certification — you can only purchase methods that appear in your OMMU order. If you want access to a product type not currently in your certification, contact Miracle Leaf to discuss updating your physician order.

Florida MMJ Purchase and Possession Limits

Florida law caps how much medical marijuana a certified patient can purchase and possess within a given period. Your certifying physician sets your specific milligram limits for each product type within the state's legal maximums — these limits are individual to you.

The state operates on a 70-day supply window — your physician specifies the total amount you are allowed to receive across 70 days for each certified delivery method. Verified March 2026

Florida dispensaries cannot sell you more than your registry allows. Dispensaries are required to check the OMMU registry before every transaction. If you have reached your 70-day purchase limit for a product type, no licensed dispensary can sell you more of that product until your window resets. If your current limits feel insufficient for your condition, discuss an adjustment with your physician at your next visit.

What You Can and Cannot Do With Your Card

A Florida MMJ card gives you legal access to purchase and use cannabis through licensed dispensaries. It does not remove all restrictions. Knowing the boundaries protects you legally.

You Can You Cannot
Purchase from any licensed Florida MMTC statewide Purchase from unlicensed sources — even if the product appears identical
Use medical marijuana in your private residence Smoke or vape in public spaces, restaurants, or vehicles
Transport within Florida in original sealed dispensary packaging Transport marijuana across state lines — federal law applies regardless of your card
Carry your registry ID as your patient credential Use your card in other states — Florida has no universal reciprocity program
Designate a registered caregiver to purchase on your behalf Share or give your medication to another person, even a registered patient
Use on private property with the owner's permission Use on federal property — VA facilities, national parks, federal buildings
Possess up to your physician-certified 70-day supply limit Possess amounts above your certified limit — criminal consequences apply
Federal law still classifies marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance. Your Florida MMJ card provides legal protection under Florida state law only. This has practical consequences: you cannot bring medical marijuana onto federal property, across state lines, or onto commercial aircraft — even if your destination state has legal marijuana. It may also affect federal employment, certain professional licenses, and federal housing. Consult a licensed Florida attorney if you have questions about how your card intersects with your specific situation.

Three Dates to Track to Keep Your Card Active

Most patients who experience an unexpected gap in dispensary access miss one of these three dates. Track all three — they are on different cycles and do not align with each other automatically.

📅
OMMU card expiration date
Printed on your physical card. Renew at least 30 days before this date to avoid any gap in access.
🩺
210-day physician re-evaluation
Calculated from your last physician visit — not your card date. These two dates rarely align. Mark it separately.
🔄
70-day purchase window reset
Your dispensary consultant can confirm when your current window resets and what allowance remains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go to a dispensary immediately after my physician evaluation?

Yes. Dispensary access begins the moment your certifying physician enters your certification into the OMMU registry — which happens at the time of your evaluation at Miracle Leaf. You do not need to wait for the physical card to arrive. Bring your Florida ID and your OMMU registry ID number to your first dispensary visit.

What do I need to bring to a Florida dispensary?

A valid Florida driver's license or state-issued ID and your OMMU patient registry ID number. Most dispensaries can look up your active certification status directly from your Florida ID once your physician's submission has processed in the registry.

How much medical marijuana can I purchase in Florida?

Your purchase limit is set by your certifying physician within the state's 70-day supply framework. The specific milligram amounts vary by patient and product type. Dispensary staff can see your remaining allowance in real time through the OMMU registry at point of sale. See our full guide on Florida MMJ possession limits.

Can I use my Florida MMJ card at any dispensary in the state?

Yes. Your OMMU certification is valid at any licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MMTC) in Florida — you are not restricted to a single dispensary or a dispensary in your home county. There are multiple licensed MMTCs throughout Palm Beach County and the surrounding area.

Can I smoke medical marijuana in Florida?

Yes — smokable flower is a legal delivery method for certified Florida MMJ patients since 2019. However, smoking and vaping are prohibited in all public places, vehicles, workplaces, and anywhere tobacco smoking is banned under Florida law. Private residences are generally permitted with the property owner's consent. See our full guide: Can You Smoke Medical Marijuana in Florida?

Can I travel with my Florida medical marijuana card?

Within Florida, you may transport your medical marijuana in its original sealed dispensary packaging. Federal law prohibits transporting marijuana across state lines regardless of your card or the laws of either state involved. Do not bring medical marijuana onto federal property or onto commercial aircraft — this remains a federal offense.
